Origins Wu San-Lien (1899–1988) was a pioneer of Taiwan’s nationalist, social, and political movements during both the Japanese colonial period and the postwar era. He served as a reporter for Taiwan Shinminpo, a National Assembly representative, the first popularly elected mayor of Taipei City, a Taiwan Provincial Assembly member, and a senior policy adviser. Beyond politics, he founded several enterprises and schools, managed the Independence Evening Post, and devoted himself to promoting education and local culture. After his passing in 1988, his children sought to carry forward his spirit by inviting noted scholars such as Chen Chi-lu, Chang Yen-hsien, Lin Mei-jung, and Hsiang Yang to establish the Wu San-Lien Taiwan Historical Materials Foundation, which officially began operations in 1991. Mission The Foundation established the “Taiwan Historical Materials Center” to collect and preserve Taiwan’s historical artifacts and documents—returning scattered materials to their rightful place and bringing hidden ones back into view. Through systematic classification and organization, it presents the diverse and rich original face of Taiwan’s historical sources, promotes integration of materials, and makes them accessible to the public and researchers. The Foundation also organizes lectures, seminars, and special projects to encourage research on Taiwan’s history and historical materials. It publishes Taiwan Historical Materials Research and reprints significant sources such as books, newspapers, and journals. Future Outlook Upholding the spirit of “willing to be the ox, unafraid of having no plow to pull,” the Foundation continues to advance the collection and publication of historical materials. Its greatest aspiration is to establish a professional Taiwan history library, providing a permanent home for Taiwan’s historical sources so they will no longer be scattered, hidden, or neglected, thereby laying a lasting foundation for the study of Taiwan’s history.
