1996年，當我們要為新成立的公司取名字的時候，是先找到了英文名稱 LOCUS，在一本拉丁文字典裡，我們看到locus有這樣的意思：「一個有些很有意思的事情正在發生的地方。」
後來，在另一本拉丁文字典裡又看到 locus 有這樣的定義：1、適時適地；2、書裡的段落；3、居所，所以我們就決定了用 LOCUS 當公司的英文名稱。
我們花了一段時間尋找和 LOCUS 相對應的中文名稱，最後決定了「大塊」。「大塊」最早見諸於〈莊子〉：「大塊載我以形，勞我以生，佚我以老，息我以死。」也就是「天地」的意思。但更為人熟知的出處應該是李白的詩：「陽春召我以煙景，大塊假我以文章。」〈春夜宴從弟桃花園序〉。
中文「大塊」所代表的「天地」和英文 LOCUS 很相配。此外，我們也很喜歡白話文裡「大塊」所讓人能想到的：「大塊吃肉，大碗喝酒；大塊蛋糕，大把鮮花；大塊文章，大好人生。」
綜合而言，我們期盼「大塊」所傳達的訊息是：「這家公司希望能為讀者提供些很有意思的閱讀——讓自己開闊，也好玩的閱讀。」

Searching for a corresponding Chinese name, we settled on "大塊" (da kuai), meaning "Big Piece" or "Large Chunk." Originating from Zhuangzi's writings and well-known in Li Bai's poetry, "大塊" embodies the concept of "天地" (heaven and earth). Aligning with the English name LOCUS, we appreciate the colloquial connotations, evoking images of enjoying life with substantial elements like meat, wine, cake, and meaningful writings.
