Manga Made in Italy

18 January 2021 /
COMICON, Italian Economic, Trade and Cultural Promotion Office, and Taipei Book Fair Foudation join together and proudly present the exhibition Manga Made in Italy at Taipei Internatioanl Book Exhibition.

More than forty years after the "invasion" of Japanese animation during the Seventies, the made in Italy production of comics strongly inspired by manga is becoming a growing presence in Italian publishing landscape. This exhibition presents 10 selected works among the most significant Italian manga published in the 2010s.

Within the last ten years, as a result of a generational change brought by 'millennials' authors, the pervasive influence of Japanese visual culture, and the constant leadership of manga in the global comics market, Italian manga increased as never before. In the early 1980s, some Italian artists had reinterpreted the stories of Candy Candy, UFO Robot Grendizer or other heroes of animated series. Italy has also developed a role within the wider "euromanga" phenomenon (a word that indicates the comics created in Europe in the style of Japanese manga), alongside France and Germany.

Thanks to these - and many others - works, the scene of Italian-made manga faces the new decade with the energy of a subtle cultural revolution. It also promises to ferry the tradition of Italian comics towards new trajectories of international comics.
