Hoo Joo Chuan, born in a northern fishing village in Malaysia, grew up in a simple suburban neighborhood. His father was a lifelong fisherman, whereas his mother bred and raised pigs in the backyard. Hoo enjoyed catching fish in the river, having pet fish, and helping his family with poultry farming. These unforgettable childhood memories bequeathed to him a lifelong love of nature and an infinite imagination. He has received many prestigious awards, such as the Taipei Literature Award, the United Daily News Group Literature Award, and the China Times Literature Award.
